Day 29 [5/4/10]

Wikipedia is a great site. I use it all the time for papers, assignments, homework, and just to look up different things. I think when teachers tell me not to use it, it makes me wonder why they think it is such a horrible site. I will let my students use it in the classroom considering if I use it this much, they will get the same knowledge from it and that is what I want from them. This is a tech-savy world these days and if my students learn from the internet, why would I give them sites that they are not allowed to use. Especially if they are gaining factual knowledge from teh sites that i ban from their using. I do not beleive that wikipedia is an uncredible, unvalidated website. I think that all students, if willing, should be able to use this site, if and only if they gain factual knowledge from it. If they use it correctly, they will understand things in a better way using the links and sources provided in each wikipedia website.

Day 28 [4/29/10]

Today in class, we chose the website that we were going to validate. I chose a website about Martin Luter King Jr.( http://www.martinlutherking.org/ ) This website looked like it would be credible with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr., a picture of him, and links that were provided to learn more about the man. However, there were no dates on this website, therefore, I did not know if it was outdated or not. Also, it had other links all around one of which said "Learn more about Kwanzaa". Personally I do not understand why if I were learning abuot Martin Luther, why I would want to know anything abuot Kwanzaa. Another big link right under his picutre said rap lyrics. Another reason of confusion. Why would I need to know any rap lyrics if I only wanted to learn abuot Martin Luther King Jr.? This website may have had great information, but it had way too many other things that were not perfect for the website to be completely credible.

Day 27 [4/27/10]

While searching the internet and on websites for validation, I learned alot actually. I never have looked at a site to validate it. Normally I just use the site! I learned that you need to look at dates, sources, and even just simply headings and titles to make sure that the site you use is valid and credible. The ISTE-Nets T statndard that I think goes well with this is 4a. 4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers: a. advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources. This is because everyone needs to validate the websites they choose to get research from. Every site needs to be credible.

Day 26 [4/22/10]

Today in class, all of the students gave their SMARTboard presentations. I did learn a few new things; however, I still do not like SMARTboards. One group had a really interesting interavtive website that dealt with the disection of a frog. It was the exact step by step process with vocals on how to dissect the frog. Since the website was interactive, all the students needed to do was use the interactive pens as the knives to disect the virtual frog. Once they pulled away the "skin" of the frog, the website had the insides of the frog as well. However, dealing with this interactively does not actually show the students the dimensions in the frog. It also does not have the smell and mess which may or may not be a good thing. However, the students do not get the full effect. Once again the SMARTboard gave my group trouble during our presentation, therefore, I still agree with my previous blog, that SMARTboards are not worth the investment.

Day 25 [4/20/10]

Today's blogging assignment is to answer the question "Are Smartboards worth the investment"? Personally, I do not think they are worth the investment. I feel that most of the time they do not work! Students probably do love SMARTboards due to the fact that when they attend classes, they know that they are going to spend half of the time working on getting the SMARTboard to work properly. For example, in the classes that I have used them, there has been plenty of times where instead of learning new things, I am stuck just sitting there while the teacher fixes the problems. Also, I feel that teachers can use a whiteboard, chalkboard, or a projector to do the same things that most teachers use the SMARTboard for. If they teachers decided to use it in a way that is is supposed to be used, meaning interactive and not just plan write notes or drawing pictures, then it may be worth it. However, all in all I do not feel that a SMARTboard is worth that load of money due to the fact that students are going to learn in any way that you teach, not with just technologically advanced tools that may or may not work correctly.

Monday, April 19, 2010

Day 24 [4/15/10]

Today in class, our SMARTboard whiteboard didn't work properly. However, once it started working, it seemed like a fun way to explore teaching criterias. When looking at the ISTE-Nets T standards, I feel that one in particular is the best for teachers using SMARTboard whiteboard. The ISTE-Nets T standard is 1.a. 1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers: a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness. This is because they are not actually teaching about the SMARTboard or any technology, they are teaching them the knowledge they already know through the SMARTboard, whiteboard, or any other form of technology.

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Day 23 [4/13/10]

Today in class, we discovered the SMARTboard whiteboard. We read an article on what it was, how to use it, and how it could be used in a classroom. This article touched on so many different reasons why the SMARTboard would be a great learning tool in the classroom. However, SMARTboards are very expensive. They need a computer, projector, and the board itself. In the article, however, it gives great examples on why it is worth the expenses. For instance, the article states "Research also indicates higher levels of student retention, and notes taken on an interactive whiteboard can play a key role in the student review process." This is a great way just to get the students involved. Another piece of evidence that was found in this article says that it keeps the students attendence up in the classrooms. The article, however, was written by the inventors of the smartboard, so therefore, it needs to be taken into consideration that there still may be some flaws.

Day 22 [4/8/10]

As students complete webquests they are using alot of technology skills. The 21st century skill that they are using the most of is Information, Media, and Technology Skills, ICT (Information, Communication, and Technology) Literacy. This is because they are using technology effectively by: Using digital technologies (computers, PDAs, media players, GPS, etc.), communication/networking tools, and social networks appropriately to access, manage, integrate, evaluate and create information to successfully function in a knowledge economy. By doing all of this, they are creating an easier way to gain knowledge with their one of their favorite new fads, technology and computers! The internet is a big deal to students, therefore, using the internet and computers to help them create a webquest or any other sites on the world wide web, they are learning it in a fun way as oppose to a boring way in a class room with a teacher talking in all monotones. They can create a fun webquest using bright vivid colors and great graphics to explain what they are thinking.

Tuesday, April 6, 2010

Day 21 [4/6/10]

Today we worked on our Webquests. I think that this is a fun way to A. learn abuot lesson planning B. work with technology and C. work with the students in a technological world. The ISTE-Nets T standard that I feel goes best with this Webquest activity is 2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students' diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources. This is because I am designind and Developing a Digital-Age lesson plan for these students. They are also learning diverse learning styles through the lesson I chose by using listening skills and locomotor skills. This is a great way to interact with other teachers, as well, by sharing lesson plan ideas, asking questions for advice, and giving feedback. This is a great way to interact with future teachers as well (including myself). This is because I can give feedback as well as learn new things from these teachers.

Day 20 [4/1/10]

Today in class we looked through Webquests for a lesson that we can modify. The point of this is leading us up to making our own webquest while we are modifying the one we found. I found a webquest that demonstrates listening skills along with locomotor skills. (Dr. Seuss) I chose this webquest due to the fact that it had absolutley no graphics, the color scheme was too hard to read, and the process was not clear. THerefore I decided to make my own graphics to spice up the webquest itself, make a better color scheme that is easy to read, and make my own process to the lesson. I found that it was not as hard as I thuoght. It was almost easy! It was also very fun. The standards that I found for this site were 1.0- Movement forms/ Motor Skills and Movement Patterns, and 1.1.3- imitate locomotor movements in personal and general space.

Day 19 [3/30/10]

Today in class, Denise had us get into groups of four and assign ourselves a role from Webquest: The Efficiency Expert, The Affiliator, The Altitudinist, and the Technophile. I chose to search the websites as The Affiliator. As we went through the websites that were available to us on this site, we thuoght in the mindset of the role we had to play. The Affiliator's mindset was to view the websites in a way of learning is better when in groups. Thinking in this mindset of the role I played, I felt that the most efficient one for working in groups was the Unraveling the Underground Railroad. This was because it uses a group of four individuals to literally play a certain role from the slavery times. This way, I feel, is very groups learning efficient. The ISTE-Nets student standard that I feel goes well with this activity is 4c. (4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making c. collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions. ) This is because they aer using their critical thinking to make a decision on which lesson to use.

Thursday, March 25, 2010

Day 18 [3/25/10]

Today in class we watched the eight little indians' digital stories. I absolutley loved this activity. The students were all so very creative. I think that every Intermediate grade school classroom should have a technology class to learn how to do things like that. This is because it helps them use their creative minds, along with technology, along with computer skills, all while having a good time. I feel that the ISTE Nets standard for students that fits best with this activity of digital stories is 1a. (1.1. Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students: a. apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes.) Students obviously already know how to write stories, they are now learning to use that writing skill to create a story of their own and generating it into a technological sense.

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Day 17 [3/23/10]

Today we became part of a social network called Bruceton's Five. We made ourselves a profile that included the magazine cover that we designed and a miniautobiography. This miniautobiography was a really neat way to communicate information about ones self to other students using this site. I feel that this helps students develop competencies in the Partnership for 21st Century Skills standards for (ICT) Information, Communication & Technology because it helps them understand the use of technology and the ways that it helps us interact with each other. This helps them manage things in their lives by using one of their favorite tools, a computer! I know that I feel better when typing out something abuot myself, finding pictures that go well with the topics I am talking about, and finding out other information about my fellow peers and friends. The Ning website was really fun and interesting, and I am sure that younger students feel the same way.

Monday, March 22, 2010

Day 16 [3/11/10]

Today in class we made a magazine cover starring us- recieving the award as the teacher of the year. This magazine cover was made by microsoft poewr point. We started by taking a picture of ourselves, using it as the cover, then writing little tid bits around the picture to prove that we were the best for this award. This obviously isn't a real magazine cover, but it is a fun way to better unnerstand how media works. It is a great way to utilize the materials that need to be used for the process of magazine covers. Until I did it myself, I was not sure how to do anything like that. I enjoyed this activity and am sure that elementary students would appreciate it as well. IT is honestly a great way to better understand the different emotions, expressions, and interpretations that are put into the work of the media; especially in magazine covers.

Day 15 [3-9-10]

Today in class we looked at two magazine covers. On both of the covers, Arnold Schwarzenegger was the main focus. However, the two covers were completely opposite from each other. The first one had him in a work-out outfit to show the muscles, toneness, and it focused on his fitness. The other cover was promoting him as Govenor of California. The muscles were all covered up by a suit, the lighting and positioning of the picture was different from the other cover. This proved that magazines and the media can make you feel a certain way when you read the cover. It also proves how the media can take our minds off of what may be reality, and put our minds onto something completely different. This goes well with media literacy considering all the things we need to consider. We need to understand the purpose of the article and understand the construction.

Day 14 [3/4/10]

Today Denise had us make a wordle with a group of classmates that show what Web 2.0 means to us. We chose ten words, and with the ten words we duplicated the words that were the most important (e.i. duplication ten times for the most important down to one time) Our words were: Interactive, Technology, Education, Useful, FutureTeachers, Students, Teachers, Blogging, Creative, Fun. The Learning and Innovation skill that goes best with this activity, I believe, is Creativity and Innovation: Work Creatively with Others: Demonstrate originality and inventiveness in work and understand the real world limits to adopting new ideas. This is because we worked as a group to create original words that adopt new ideas to the web site "Web 2.0 on facebook". This was a fun way instead of just a simple essay or writing assignment that none of the students would even learn anything about!

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Day 13 [1/2/10]

By bookmarking important pages on your blackboard or blog, this helps to not only save time, but to make things easier for you to be able to just simply click on the pages that you visit often. The Information, Media, and Technology Skills that I feel go well with this is as follows: Information: Information Literacy: Access and Evaluate Information Access information efficiently (time)and effectively(sources). Media: Media Literacy Analyze Media Create Media Products Understand and utilize the most appropriate media creation tools, characteristics and conventions. Technology: ICT Literacy Apply Technology Effectively Use technology as a tool to research, organize, evaluate and communicate information. This is because by using book marks on certain pages, you can easily have access to technological sites and the media.

Day 12 [2/25/10]

Bunner
View more presentations from Emily.

Day 12 [2/25/10]

Today in class, Denise had us make a hypermedia quiz. This is a quiz that uses the program "Microsoft Powerpoint". She had us make a three slided quiz. The first slide is the inncorrect answer, the second is the quiz itself, and the third is the correct answer. We got to chose the question that we used, the pictures for the answers, the colors, and the sounds. THis was a very fun activity. I think that students would have a lot of fun with this activity becuase they are more hands on with the technology part instead of just making up questions on a peice of paper. This could even be a great fun way to experience studying for a test as well. The Life and Career Skill that I feel goes the best with this activity is "Initiative and Self Direction" - "Be Self-directed Learners Go beyond basic mastery of skills and/or curriculum to explore and expand one’s own learning and opportunities to gain expertise" This is due to the fact that they are going beyond the "usual" way of learning and creating their own fun skills to create study habits.

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

Day 11 [2/23/10]

Today in class, Denise had us commenting back to the Fifth grade Little Indians through the Blogmeister web site. They started a story and we continued it. Next class they will comment back and we will finish it. I think this is a fun activity because the studnets are not only using technology, but they are communicating with college students. This not only will make them feel like they are important, but it also will help them with their writing skills. The Life and Career Skill Standard that fits best with this activity is Productivity & Accountability - Produce Results Demonstrate additional attributes associated with producing high quality products including the abilities to: Collaborate and cooperate effectively with teams. This is because we are collaborating with the fifth grade Little Indians through technology. This is also very effective for them, therefore, we are helping them with the ability to cooperate in online communication skills.

Day 10 [2-18-10]

Today in class Denise had us all work on our photo stories. We put them up on youtube then commented on each others. I really enjoyed watching everyone's videos. My favorite (which I already told her) was Kayla Kople's. She showed great quotes, pictures, and personal goals for becoming a teacher. I was very satisfied with my video; however, I did not get to add sound due to the fact that both computers I worked with did not let me do this. By students making videos and watching videos to help them learn, I feel that this really helps them learn better then listening to lectures and taking notes. The ISTE-NETS standard that I feel that goes with this is 5a. (5. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. a. advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology.) This is because students are learning how to use the internet and technology in a safe, responsible way. I believe that the internet can either be extremely helpful or extremely dangerous. By students learning the right way to use the internet, they will successfully understand the dangers of it.

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Day 9 [2/16/10]

Today in class, Denise had us make a photo story. This was new to me because I have never done anything like that at all! However, it turned out to be really fun and interesting. I enjoyed this activity a lot. The story that we had to make needed to contain a quote about teachers and a few pictures that went well with the quote. I used my favorite teaching quote, "The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the books." I feel that the ISTE NETS standard that fits the best with this activity is 6a. (6. Technology Operations and Concepts Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. a. understands and use technology systems.) This is because students are using technology operations and concepts while learning to understand how to use them. I would love to use this kind of activity in my classroom, or at least use this photo story myself for teaching purposes. With majority of children watching television and spending hours on the internet, I feel that showing a bright, multicolor, fun, slide show would help them learn better.

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Day 8 [1/11/10]

Once again, class was cancelled today. Today's blog assignment is to write about an out-of-school experience that helped us learn the ISTE-NETS standards. I think that having a facebook and a myspace helped me to better keep in contact with people. It is a great way to keep in the digital world and to connect with old friends, new friends, best friends, and even the people you meet by using facebook or myspace. The ISTE-NETS standard that I think goes well with this out-of-school experience is 2a. ( 2. Communication and Collaboration - Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. a. interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media. ) This is because this helps people keep in touch with people at a distance as well as in the same area. Not only are people communicating through this, but people also collaborate ideas and suggestions.

Day 7 [2/9/10]

Today class was cancelled. However, our blogging assignment for today is to explain a time within my K-16 school experience that has helped me meet one of the ISTE-NETS standards. When I was in the 7th grade, I had a library teacher named Mrs. Evans. She was one of my favorite teachers (she loved me too!). She showed us a futuristic film strip every class about people who lived in an old library that was hidden underground from the intruders that invaded earth. (The film was a little lame but it got the point across) It showed us how to find information correctly in a library. She also gave us worksheets that made us use the information that we learned to help us find the answers. This was a great class to have because it also helped us to use this knowledge later down the road for researching purposes. The ISTE-NETS standard that I feel this experience helped me with is 3b. (3. Research and Information Fluency - Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. b. locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media.) This standard goes well because it helped with research information not only in the library, but with digital tools as well.

Thursday, February 4, 2010

Day 6 [2/4/10]

Today in class Denise had us skpe with a 5th grade class in California. They had asked questions about communication sites on the internet, and we answered the questions through skyping. My questions were harder questions to answer, but I feel like I answered them to the best of my knowledge. I personally think that my answers were answered correctly. The ISTE NETS standards that I believe goes with today's activity is 2a. [2. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. a. interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media. ] This is because we were communicating and collaborating ideas with each other. We were helping them with questions about autobiographies and internet safety. This was a great way to help them out since we were communicating on the internet.

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Today Denise had us make a questionaire of two different questions. Every student then answered the questions of their classmates. After all the students answered my questions, I made a graph to show the results (above). This was a great way to help us use our blogs. Also, we watched a video about Google docs and learned how to use them. The ISTE NETS standard is 3d. [3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning. d.Model and Facilitate Effective Use of Current and Emerging Tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning.] This is because we are learning how to use digital-age work by researching and learning different ways to better us in our writing and communication skills. We also had technical difficulties, however, we would have skyped with a teacher from across the country. That is definetly another way of using digital-age work to communicate with other teachers to learn different things.

Day 4 [1/28/10]

On day four, Denise had us join a facebook group so that we can all communicate through it. This group allows us to discuss different situations that deals with digital learning. The ISTE NETS standard that I believe goes well this this task is 1c. [ 1.Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity - c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes. ] This is relevant because we are inspring students to be creative on a well-known site, facebook, that they use everyday. Not only will they go on this website now to chat with friends, but they will be able to reflect upon different postings and comments that deal with the digital age of technology. I believe that this is a great way of teaching students to be creative and outspoken about learning using their everyday digital devices.

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Day 3 [1/26/10]

On day three, Denise had us add the website link Classroom 2.0 to our blogs. This website helps us to interact with other teachers that are in our field and who can give us advice or teach us a thing or two. This site lets teachers from all over the world communicate ideas and lesson plans to one another in a virtual environment. The ISTE NETS standard that I feel represents the lesson today is 1d. [ 1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity - d. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments.] By teachers viewing and using sites like these, the students will look up to a teacher and do the same. The students would then use sites like these to collaborate their own thoughts with fellow classmates and other elementary students throughout the world.

Day 2 [1/21/19]

On day two of class, Denise had us look through resume outlines and create our own. This task helped up to ready ourselves for our professional jobs once we are ready to head out to the real world. I believe that the ISTE NETS standard that best fits this situation would be 5c. [5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership - c. evaluates and reflects on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning.] This is because we are preparing ourselves for our profession of the future. This is also helping us in growth as individuals. Also, leadership is another tool that we as teachers need to have. We also need to prove to our future employers that we as individuals understand the digital tools and resources; especially with the fast growing amount of technology in today’s society.

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Day 1 [1/19/10]

On day one Denise had us all get out our cell phones. Most teachers absolutley hate when students have their cell phones out. The task she had us do was text adjectives to a web site describing what we knew about California. Denise then made a wordle of all the words we thuoght described California. I feel that the ISTE NETS standard for this activity was 3b. [3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning - b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation.] This is because we were using Digital-Age devices, and communicating with other students, peers, and even members of another community. This was actually a great activity to show how the technology world works. One can communicate with students of all ages all across the world.
